Birken Manufacturing fabricates struts for use in the turbine exhaust case of the Trent 900 engine. This engine is one of two designed for the Airbus A-380 jumbo-jet. Operating various machining centers, several processes are utilized including welding, vertical / horizontal CNC milling, electrical discharge machining (EDM), water jet cutting, deburring and hot forming. Made from sheet metal and forged components, the struts have an envelope of approximately 9" x 10" and a weight of 7 to 12 lbs. for the completed assembly. In accordance with customer specifications, we maintain extremely tight tolerances including a profile surface of 0.60 mm and a flatness of 0.15 mm. To ensure the highest quality, we perform internal dimensional and fluorescent penetrant inspections and additional tests using guillotine gages and outside x-ray.
